Just one week ago, a staff member from the Kentucky Humane Society found a cardboard box with “FOUND HELP ME written on the top near the trash bin. The box had been taped shut with air holes punched in, and when Warren opened the box he was brought to tears. An emaciated and miserable looking puppy stared up at him.
Sadly, the six-month-old puppy went through too much in his short life, and succumbed to his injuries on Friday.
“We are devastated to share with you that Liam has passed away. The emergency hospital contacted our veterinary team to say that Liam had coded.. They began lifesaving measures, but he was not responding. The veterinarian believed that Liam was suffering, and that humane euthanasia was the most merciful thing to do. Liam died peacefully, and he is no longer in pain.”

When found, Liam’s inflamed skin was raw and swollen from infection; he was missing almost all of his fur, and he was bloody from the sores that covered his thin body. In addition, he was so weak from demodectic mange and malnutrition, he wasn’t able to stand on his own. Weighing only 15 pounds, where the typical weight for a dog of his age and breed should have been at least 25 pounds, and although he has adult teeth, his growth had likely been stunted due to malnutrition.
And if that wasn’t enough for a puppy to handle, two days later Liam tested positive for parvovirus, causing painful and severe gastrointestinal distress too often leading to blood poisoning and death. Liam simply did not have the arsenal of strength needed to fight off the terrible virus.
Many thanks to all of the people who donated to Liam, who prayed for Liam and who help all animal victims of neglect, torture and abandonment. Liam’s story is surely not a unique case, but this puppy was special to many because he could be seen, he could be heard and what happened to him is not alright. Please keep helping; you do make a difference. At the very least, Liam knew he was loved. Rest in peace little one.
