In Culpeper, Virginia, a Goldendoodle named Harley has captured the hearts of animal lovers after his story of rescuing and falling in love with a tiny fawn went viral on social media. The dog’s owner, Ralph Dorn posted Harley’s adorable adventure on Facebook, and since then the story has been shared more than 252 thousand times.
It began on June 2, when Dorn had been looking for Harley only to spot his dog about 200 feet out into the lake swimming with another animal. When he looked closer, Ralph could tell it was a baby fawn and couldn’t imagine how the little one even got out there, but Harley was already in rescue mode, and dogs just don’t have to ask questions.
And so Harley and the tiny baby deer swam side by side to the shore, and when they arrived Dorn helped the two onto the side of the shore carefully placing the baby on the grass. Harley followed intently and gently began to lick her wet body.
The mother did return for her baby once Harley and Dorn walked away, but there’s more:
“The story continues. This morning Harley got restless running from window to window. I opened the front door and we could hear the fawn bleating. Harley ran into the tree line and found the fawn. The little one stopped bleating, tail wagging, they touched noses sniffed each other and Harley came calmly back to the house with me.”
According to People, by the end of the day, the mother and baby were gone; neither have been seen again. Dorn, a retired Marine Corps pilot admitted that even as a puppy, Harley had a good heart and has always been loving with both children and animals.
