At the West Valley Animal Care Center in Arizona, a very scared and unsocialized young Labrador retriever dubbed Ritta needs a near miracle to save her life. The staff at the shelter have continued to work with her to improve her interactions with people, leash skills and self-confidence, but have stated if her behavior does not improve, she may become at-risk for euthanasia.

Ritta’s owner has not shown up; the dog was found on January 5, 2021 near 29th Ave and Glenrosa in Phoenix. She is described as a two-year-old brindle Labrador retriever mix and can only leave with an approved New Hope Rescue partner.

“1/5/2021 Observation dog low growled on approach, would avoid officer, used net and dog froze in net. allowed petting and micro scan in net, used snare for officer and dog protection, alligator rolled and bit at snare.”

When Ritta arrived at the shelter that same afternoon she was very fearful, however allowed light petting and was able to be given her vaccinations without issue. Three days later, she remained frozen in her kennel, retreated, growled and snapped at the leash. She was very tense as a collar was placed on her and when taken to the yard and introduced to one dog, she would not approach him. When the other dog approached her, she became tense.

Since then, Ritta is still very frightened and remains in the back of her kennel. Her last observation report was indeed heartbreaking:

“1/13/2020 Observation Locked in back of kennel; curled up in corner, trembling, growled, urinated when handler attempted to block out; handler tossed treats in kennel and left door open for about 5 minutes – did not eat treats or exit kennel, remained in corner.”

Follow Ritta’s plight on Facebook as advocates share her story with approved rescue organizations, friends, family and social media contacts able to help. Sadly, this pup has had few visitors and few pledges. Sharing saves lives.
