Friendly, dog-loving deer seized by DNR officials after complaint about a ‘pet deer’

A friendly deer, who had a special relationship with a family’s two dogs, has been seized by DNR officials in Indiana following a complaint about a “pet deer” at a residence in Fishers. As reported by WTRF News, the deer, dubbed Bimbo, was taken under the wing of the Lopez family, who found him near a dangerously busy road, away from his mother, when he was young.

Trixi Lopez tells the news agency:

“We thought he would end up leaving, just taking off and not coming back, but he actually started forming a really great bond with our dogs.”

Though Bimbo was never confined at the residence, Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) officers arrived to the Lopez home on Tuesday to take him away because someone had reported that he was a pet at their house. Capt. Jet Quillen, a spokesman for the agency, tells WTRF News:

“We understand that these situations can be difficult and we have empathy for the family, but we can’t overlook the law. It’s not fair for that wild animal to be kept as a pet. Wild animals are meant to be wild.”

But Trixi stated that Bimbo could have left if he wanted to:

We’re not holding him hostage here. We don’t have him tied to a rope, to a chain. He’s free to come and go as he pleases.

DNR officials determined that Bimbo was a “pet” because they saw pictures of him inside of the home on social media. Bimbo’s canine friends will have to make do without their buddy, who has been turned over to a licensed animal rehabilitator who will attempt to make him more like a wild animal than a pet dog.
