In Volusia County, authorities arrested a man for shooting the family dog in the face during a domestic dispute. Steven Parsons, 30, is being held in the county jail without bond for the incident.

According to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office press release, Parson’s girlfriend called deputies on Thursday evening stating that she had hid guns from Parson because he was drunk and said he was going to use a gun on himself. He then became aggressive, and the girlfriend left the house in fear.

“Deputies entered the house to check on the safety of two children inside, an 8-year-old boy and a 10-year-old girl. They were upset but uninjured. Deputies immediately noticed blood throughout the house, and moment later they were greeted by a pit bull mix, who came around a corner bleeding heavily with an apparent gunshot wound between the eyes. The dog was friendly toward deputies, walking around and wagging its tail, seemingly stable and alert despite the injury.”

Parsons said he shot the dog because the dog bit him, however the girlfriend told deputies the dog bit him because he was yelling. The woman took the dog to an emergency veterinarian clinic. According to NewsdayDaytonaBeach, deputies say the dog, Chappo, was kept overnight for observation and is expected to make a full recovery. The veterinarian found an entry wound near his nose and an exit wound near his mouth/cheek.

Parsons remains in custody and has been charged with animal cruelty, child abuse and shooting into a dwelling.
