In Callahan, Florida, a 21-year-old man faces animal cruelty charges and authorities allege he beat his dog to death with a baseball bat on Wednesday after the dog attacked a puppy.

According to First Coast News, Jacob Eugene Thornton was arrested by the Nassau County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies arrived at the Bismark Road home after Nassau County Animal Services reported the dead dog. Thornton told authorities the dog had attacked the puppy while he was in the shower, and someone else broke up the fight and rushed the puppy to a veterinarian.

After Thornton was told about the fight, he took the dog outside “to discipline it” and then returned to the home saying the dog would no longer be a problem because it was dead.

The grizzly report stated Thornton had used a bat with a screw protruding from it.
