The Prairie Du Chien Fire Department in Wisconsin happened to be at the right place at the right time on Saturday when they saved a dog after the playful pooch fell through the ice.
According to News8000, the crew from the fire department had been on a training session when a family’s dog playing fetch on the backwaters of the Mississippi River tried to retrieve a stick and fell through the ice. The 100-pound black Labrador retriever tried to hoist himself out of the freezing water by putting his paws on the ice, but could not get out.
Just a few miles away, the fire department had been on a training mission when they were notified to help; the firefighters grabbed the ladder truck and were able to stretch the ladder over the water and safely pluck the pooch out of the water. The dog had been struggling to keep his head above the water when one of the officers grabbed him by the collar.
The 100-pound dog named Clyde “shook it off” as most dogs will do, and as he was ushered into the basket, he just wanted to be petted and thanked the crew with a bunch of slobbery dog kisses. Who could ask for a better thank you?
Clyde’s owners were smart to call for help – had they ventured out onto the ice, this happy ending easily could have become one of a dangerous rescue or worse for both humans and pooch.
