In Selden, New York, the Suffolk Police arrested a man who they say beat his four-month-old chocolate Labrador retriever in front of his children on Tuesday. Daniel Keelan, 35, was arrested on Friday and has been charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, a felony and two misdemeanor counts of endangering the welfare of a child.
According to Newsday, authorities received a complaint about suspected animal cruelty from an animal hospital when Coco was brought in with severe injuries by Keelan who told the staff the puppy had been hit by a vehicle. The hospital staff opined the puppy’s injuries were not consistent with being struck by a vehicle.
Officers found Keelan had thrown the puppy against a wall, punched him and kicked the defenseless little pooch in front of his two children at their home. Coco suffered fractures to his femur, tibia and multiple ribs. His rear leg injuries required emergency surgery using pins and plates.
At the family’s home, authorities also found a four-month-old silver Labrador retriever named Lucky; that puppy was also brought to the veterinarian for an examination and will be released to the Brookhaven Animal Shelter .
At the hearing on Friday, Judge James Matthews ordered Keelan to undergo supervised release, as the charges may not be bail-eligible. Keelan was ordered to report to probation on Monday and refrain from drinking alcohol. Matthews also issued orders of protection for the two children and the puppies.
