An Iowa family lives with the first dog confirmed to have Covid-19 in the state. As reported by the Des Moines Register, the Shriver family’s dog, Eden, showed symptoms of the virus before she was tested for Covid-19. A DNA test and nasal swab confirmed that the boxer did indeed have the novel coronavirus.
It turns out that the Shrivers gave their pooch the infection – members of the household had tested positive and were quarantining at home when Eden started coughing and showing signs of illness. On February 3, owner Stever Shriver alerted others to the family’s pet’s illness, writing:
Our dog Eden has tested positive with Covid 19. She is the first dog in Iowa so it’s not super common. Her symptoms were a super hacking dry continuous cough. We did an initial nasal swab and then followed up with DNA blood work to confirm. She is fine but thought y’all should know you can give Covid to your pets.
A veterinarian had Eden undergo treatment for kennel cough, and a 14-day quarantine was mandated for everyone in the house (including Eden).
