An estimated 55,000 pigs and piglets are dead after a massive fire swept through a commercial breeding facility in Germany. According to multiple sources, the blaze took place at one of the largest pig breeding businesses in Germany and approximately 50,000 piglets and 7,000 sows were being held there. A spokesman for the in Alt Tellin facility said that over 55,000 of the animals died and approximately 1,300 were rescued.

As reported by USA Today, the fire broke out on Tuesday and spread through the ventilation system – destroying stalls where the pigs were held. The cause of the devastating fire has not yet been determined.

Demonstrators who hope to see an end to animal torture were at the scene of the fire on Wednesday.
