How much is the life of a homeless dog worth? Is it worth time? Effort? A name? Care? An advocate revealed just how little a dog’s life was worth in New York on Monday – she shared the heartbreaking last moments of a malnourished dog dubbed Cowboy.

In a public Facebook post, Sharon Arger writes:

What was Cowboy’s life worth in NYC at ACC? 12 minutes.

Cowboy arrived at 4:06 pm,

He was examined by the veterinarian on call at 4:11 p.m. And killed at 4:23.

According to Arger, a veterinarian took twelve minutes of exam time to determine that Cowboy was in end-stage renal failure. No time for bloodwork, urinalysis, or for that matter, any other tests – just a visual exam.

According to Adamson Veterinary Services, end stage renal failure can be diagnosed by:

Blood and urine tests are used to determine if kidney failure is present and possible cause of the kidney failure. Sometimes a biopsy of the kidney is recommended. A chemistry profile will give us information on kidney, liver, pancreas and adrenal function. It will provide us with information on mineral and electrolyte balances. This allows us to determine the stage of kidney disease present and provide treatment.

The complete blood count (CBC) will provide information that will tell us if your pet is anemic or dehydrated. Infection can sometimes be identified as well.

But Cowboy got a 12 minute exam, and then he was put down. Arger writes:

There were rescues interested in helping him and donations were being offered. But little did the rescues know, he’d already been killed without one chance to recover. Rescues were willing to save his life, but they would have been too late

We see poor dogs all the time in such dire emergency need. Those facilities publish a plea as they go into save mode to preserve an animal’s life if at all possible.

Dogs can recover, according to veterinarians, dogs in the last stages of kidney failure are lethargic, loss of appetite, and breathing problems none of which Cowboy was exhibiting. Cowboy wasn’t given the opportunity to live by immediate treatment.

Rest in peace Cowboy – your life should have been worth more than 12 minutes.
