Dog warden asks for ‘decency’ after discovery of puppy who was left in outdoor kennel in the cold

The dog warden in Richland County, Ohio, has asked for “discretion, common sense and decency,” from people who opt to use the local shelter’s outdoor kennels for relinquishing a pet. The request follows the discovery of a puppy who was left in the outside kennel overnight in the cold.

The Richland County Dog Warden’s Office & Shelter writes:

At approximately 5 pm, a female driving a navy blue Ford Fusion dropped this 4 month old puppy off in our outdoor kennels.

While we understand that when someone finds a stray, they can’t always keep it or some people would prefer to dump their dogs here when we aren’t open, we ask that people kindly use some discretion, common sense and decency.

Describing the frigid temps the puppy was forced to endure before being found by shelter staff:

Last night, from 5 pm until 8 am this morning, the temperature dropped from 31 degrees with wind gusts up to 15 mph to 18 degrees this morning when he was found and brought in. Our outdoor kennels are not designed to provide much shelter from the elements and we are lucky this puppy is not suffering any negative effects from the weather.

The shelter is working to add dog houses to the outdoor kennels to help keep relinquished animals safe from the elements. In the meantime, the staff released an advisory, writing:

During this weather, please attempt to keep dogs, especially young, old, skinny, short haired or flat faced dogs, out of the elements until they can be safely brought into the shelter.
