A farm in Scottsdale, Arizona, will soon be opening a “hotel for dogs” to help provide a safe place for pets to stay while their homeless owners take steps to get back on their feet. According to multiple sources, the Almost Home Dog Hotel will be operating at Hunkapi Farms in converted horse stalls.

As reported by KTAR News, the horse stalls will have dog doors that lead out to a shaded dog run which will allow the pups to stretch their legs and get fresh air. According to the news agency, PHX C.A.R.E.S. often sees people choosing to remain homeless, denying themselves of services and shelter, to remain with their dogs.

Now, people in need of help can get treatment, and their dogs will receive shelter and care until a reunion is possible. Terra Schaad, Executive Director of Hunkapi programs, tells AZ Family:

It seemed like a no-brainer. We knew we we have the community here to love and support the dogs. We’re all about community here. If we can help fill a need in our community then we are going to step up and answer.”

Phoenix City Councilwoman Laura Pastor, who helped come up with the dog hotel idea after conversations with PHX C.A.R.E.S., commended the people who made this project possible on social media in late December:

This is the team making it happen. I teach my staff to think outside the box. After a year of planning we are breaking ground on our Almost Home Dog Hotel to assist homeless people. Their dogs will live here while they get back on their feet. This project is privately funded no tax payer dollars used.

The Almost Home Dog Hotel is expected to open in April.

I think this is a WONDERFUL IDEA!! Thank-you SO much for caring for our most helpless ones, in this time when there is so much cruelty to them everywhere. Maybe this will catch on.

I couldn’t agree with you more. I wish this would be instituted everywhere for the people and the animals. Don’t take away from the homeless their only family and friend that is left.
