San Bernardino Animal Services responded to a distress call on Thursday about a dog whimpering in a remote field of San Bernardino on Thursday.

According to San Bernardino Animal Services, officers went out to the area in the morning in the city’s north end. They heard a dog whimpering and eventually found a small black-and-white terrier buried up to its neck in a hole in the field.

“The dog was still alive and was whimpering,” the organization stated in a press release.

Officers dug the one-year-old puppy out and immediately transported him to a veterinary hospital. He was diagnosed with dust and dirt in his lungs and administered fluids and antibiotics. He will be carefully monitored for the 24 hours because of the possible damage to his lungs. His veterinarians are hoping, however for a full recovery.

It is believed the incident was an intentional act of animal cruelty. Anyone with information is asked to call 909.384.7272 and reference A540397.

The puppy had no tags or microchip. The puppy’s care is being covered by a grant from the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians.
