In Branford, Connecticut, a dog was left abandoned on Saturday night near the Branford Community House on what the staff of Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter called the “coldest night of the year so far.”

Early Sunday morning, a jogger contacted the animal shelter to report finding the dog believed to have been left there since late the night before. The shelter stated the dog suffered from frostbite and obvious neglect.

According to the staff, the dog dubbed Lincoln, had frostbitten paws and was barely able to walk. His body condition was rated between 2 to 3, and he is estimated to be at least 10 to 20 pounds underweight. And if that wasn’t enough for one dog to have to deal with, Lincoln also suffers from démodex mange, overgrown toe nails and appears to have pressure sores from being crated.

Lincoln has been receiving the needed medical help including therapeutic baths and a full regimen of antibiotics.

“Lincoln has made remarkable strides in the 30 hours we have had him . A great big thank you goes out to the veterinarians and staff at Madison Veterinary Hospital. The medicated baths and antibiotics and love are really helping him ! Look at how his little feet are healing so much already. A great job of course to the public who cared enough to contact us about the stray dog and a great job to the staff and ACOs at the animal shelter”, the shelter posted on their Facebook page.

If you would like to donate items, the shelter is looking for a large tempur-pedic bed, large fleece blankets, large whimzee chew bones, fleece dog coats ( 40 pound dog size ), cushioned collars and harnesses ( his skin is still raw) , and any other hypoallergenic dog treats or soft dog toys would be wonderful too . Donations can be left at the front door of the animal shelter.

The shelter has since opened an investigation and is asking anyone with information about Lincoln to call 203.315.4125. The shelter is collecting donations and items for Lincoln while he is recuperating.

This dog will need rehabilitation for quite sometime so he will not be up for adoption.

If you would like to donate towards Lincoln’s medical care or a Reward Fund the shelter is setting up, you can do so here https://www.branford-ct.gov/depar…/animal-shelter/donation please specify under seller’s instructions if it is for the Reward or Medical and other care . You can also mail checks to Dan Cosgrove Animal Shelter 749 East Main St Branford CT 06405 .
