In a disturbing video taken at night with a New Zealander punching a possum quietly sitting on a fence, has outraged animal advocates brandishing the actions of the two people involved as “despicable and blatant animal cruelty.”
The video, which has since been removed from the social platform, showed a small possum sitting on a fence. One person called to it saying, “Hey dick, what are you doing there?” Another voice then can be heard asking “Shall I smack him?” The first person replied “smack him.”
The video then shows a closed fist striking the animal sending it flying backwards off the fence. An audible noise as the animal hit the ground hard can be heard as the two people laughed.
According to a press release from Direct Animal Action, the video was shot in New Zealand but it is not apparent which part of the country.
“While possums are considered ‘pests’ in New Zealand, what is shown in this TikTok video is blatant animal cruelty and this is not acceptable behaviour.
The fact that it is being glorified on social media makes it even more despicable.
We have reported this video to the New Zealand SPCA who’ve advised us that they have an investigation underway.
We are calling on the SPCA not to take this lightly but to take serious action on it.
