Daniel, the miracle dog who survived being euthanized in a gas chamber back in 2011, has died. For those who don’t recall the incredible story, Daniel was one of 19 dogs who was placed into a gas chamber and euthanized in Florence, Alabama. Amazingly, Daniel defied the odds and survived.

After making it through what should have been unsurvivable, Daniel went to Eleventh Hour Rescue in New Jersey, and then he was adopted…living out the life that should have been his from the beginning.

Shortly after taking Daniel in, the rescue organization’s president/founder, Linda Schiller,  stated:

“When Eleventh Hour offered to take Daniel we felt that he was spared for a reason and we dared to dream that his story would help homeless animals everywhere be treated more humanely. We also dared to dream that a caring and responsive public would adopt another one of our rescued dogs or perhaps volunteer to help us or their local shelter/rescue. Earlier this week Senator Dinniman of Pa. introduced a bill he dubbed Daniel’s law to ban gassing in the state of Pa. Thanks you Senator for helping to make our dreams come true. I pray that in our lifetime we as a nation of compassionate and caring human beings will find a way to not only ban the use of gas chambers as a method of euthanasia but also find a more enlightened approach to managing our companion animal over population problem.”

And it was Eleventh Hour Rescue who broke the word of Daniel’s passing on Tuesday, writing a poignant post on Facebook:

After getting his second chance, Daniel was a little beagle with a big mission to help save the lives of other homeless animals. His life truly was spared for a greater purpose and our rescue was honored to play a part in his story. We are so sorry to his family for the loss of this amazing pup. Fly high, Daniel. We will see you at the Rainbow Bridge. 🌈 🐾 We are sure Linda was waiting for you with open arms and will look over you until the day comes to reunite with your family.

Rest in peace Daniel.

  1. Oh Daniel how you will be missed, I voted for him in the 2012 American Humane Hero dog awards and have followed his Journey ever since. Daniel and his human Joe Dwyer have been an inspiration. Rest in peace Daniel, my heartfelt condolences to Joe and your family, I know how much Daniel will be missed.
