A B.C. conservation officer, who was fired after sparing the life of two bear cubs in 2015, is fighting to get his job back. As reported by CBC News, Bryce Casavant was forced to kill the cubs’ mother after she entered someone’s home and got into an outdoor freezer in Port Hardy. Casavant was ordered to kill the mother bear, but he chose not to put down her two eight-week-old cubs.
Casavant believed that the cubs were young enough to be rehabilitated, and he was right. After taking them to a veterinarian, they were transferred to the North Island Wildlife Recovery Centre, and ultimately, released back into the wild. But Casavant still lost his job and he is petitioning to get it back.
He thought that he could return to his job after a ruling in June 2020, when the court determined that he had been improperly dismissed from his job. But that wasn’t the case. He was told that there was no position available to him.
Casavant is fighting, with the help of his lawyer, to get his original job back, and back pay. According to The Star, the government has 21 days to review and respond to the court petition.
Casavant told the Star of his ongoing frustration with the fallout from saving the baby bears:
“Public service policing has been my passion and chosen career path since my early twenties. It is disgraceful and frustrating to be continually denied the ability to immediately return to my post.”
