Colorado man uses survey stake to fight off mountain lion from killing his dog

In Estes Park, Colorado, dog-owner Gene Whannel fought off an attack from a mountain lion trying to kill his dog Sadie. It had been around 6 a.m. when Gene let his dog out in the backyard for her morning bathroom break.

According to KdvrNews, Whannel always carefully supervises the dogs’ outings because of the wildlife in the area that pose a danger to domestic pets. Suddenly he heard the sound of a mountain lion, and within seconds the cat was so fast, she was on top of Sadie.

Whannel ran over to the Sadie and the lion entangled on the ground, and as he searched for something to break up the fight and scare the mountain lion away, he found an old surveying stake.

“I grabbed that surveying stake and I hit the mountain lion once. And, I kind of remember he made eye contact with me. I swung and hit him again. And, the second time was in the face and the mountain lion released Sadie. Its jaws were on Sadie’s head. So pretty much of a death grip I guess. Whatever you want to call it,” Gene told the press.

Luckily, the lion ran away instead of trying to attack Whannel. Sadie had been severely injured; she suffered puncture wounds and was rushed to an emergency veterinarian. Sadie did lose an eye, but she’s on her way to feeling much better.

“Update on our dog Sadie and her mountain lion attack,” Whannel posted on his Facebook page. “Sadie will recover. She’s pretty well chewed up. Was in surgery from 1 to 4, three hours. Lots of puncture wounds to stitch up. She will be really sore for a while but will recover.”
