In a zoo in central China, a viral video posted on social media Tuesday showed a visitor to the Xiangwushan Zoo visiting the zoo’s wolf enclosure. The guest filmed an animal that looked like a Rottweiler dog lying in a cage meant for a wolf.
In the video translation, the visitor asked,
“Woof! Are you a wolf?”
Needless to say the social media world felt the amusement, but also raised questions about the post-Covid period and the concerns about zoos and the welfare of their inhabitants.
When the visitor asked the zoo personnel why there was a dog inside of the cage instead of a wolf, the man was told the wolf had died of old age. According to Ndtv.com, the zoo does charge an entrance fee, but has not had enough visitors to properly maintain the animals and property.
China’s lack of animal welfare laws has constantly been under attack. In another zoo, a husky had been kept in a wolf cage with other wolves. Another video found online, a dog can be seen in an enclosure with a lion and a tiger; the zoo telling viewers the dog had nursed the animals when they were orphaned by their own mother.
