In Phoenix, Arizona, a local dog rescue came to the aid of a young chihuahua running through a neighborhood near 91st Ave and Osborn with a wire contraption on his face binding its mouth shut.

According to the Arizona Small Dog Rescue, the 11-month-old puppy now named Justice, could have been used as a “bait dog” – a dog used to help train fighting dogs for the ring. This lucky pooch somehow was able to escape and was spotted by a Good Samaritan who was finally able to chase him down.

“As she got closer to him with some yummy treats, she started noticing something around his mouth. First thought was a muzzle, but why would he have a muzzle on? As she got really close to him, she then realized it was not a muzzle and this was not ok! She scooped him up and took him home.”

The woman’s husband used a pair of pliers to remove the wire contraption from the pup’s face which had prevented him from eating or drinking.

When the dog first arrived at the Arizona Small Dog Rescue on Saturday, he was a bit shy, but within minutes started to wag his tail and give kisses to everyone he met. Fortunately he was not injured.

At this time there are no leads in the case. Justice is not available for adoption at this time. Stay tuned here.

  1. I am very glad that this precious little treasure was rescued by wonderful people who will treat him well!!! He was most fortunate to have escaped from whoever was going to use him as a bait animal!!!
Seeing all those “free to good home”?ads for “rehoming unwanted pets” scares me……. how many of these precious treasures are in terrible situations due to these ads???

  2. Astounding! I know that ALL states have underground dog fighting, but it is certainly worse in some states. However, Arizona is NOT on of them. In fact, after living here for 40 years, I can say that most people, including MOST law enforcement, do NOT put up with animal abuse thugs OR dog fighting rings. That said, it would NOT surprise to learn of a ring being detected and busted. Maricopa county has some GOOD investigators with YEARS of experience and a great support system within police departments and the sheriff. They’re also well funded, which tells you that we don’t turn a blind eye like TEXANS do.
