Calgary police officer seen in video kicking K-9 Unit dog

The Calgary Police Service is investigating the conduct of an officer seen in a video kicking a K-9 Unit dog. The video circulated on social media on Wednesday on Instagram.

According to the Calgary Police, online viewers have called the action of the officer as inexcusable and reprehensible. At the time of the video, the officer and the K-9 had been on the scene at a high risk fire arms investigation. While on scene, the PSD began barking, which could have alerted offenders to the location of the officers on scene. In response to this high-stress, officer-safety situation, the handler struck the PSD once to correct the behavior. The PSD was not injured in this incident.

Supt. Ryan Ayliffe stated he does not believe this is a case of animal abuse, however the officer involved has taken immediate responsibility and expressed regret for his actions.

“Our (CPS officers) don’t train to correct dogs like that, we don’t train to interrupt behavior like that using a kick or a strike. We train verbal, and we train physical control of the leash,” Ayliffe stated.

The Criminal Code animal cruelty provisions creates more severe punishments for injuring an animal used in law enforcement. The law does not exempt police from punishment for harming a K9 unit dog.
