Nassau, Bahamas’ capital located on New Providence Island, attracts the most tourists. Daily arrival of cruise passengers flood the beautiful resorts, the expensive shops and the majestic restaurants. If only the stray dogs of the Bahamas could draw more attention. Thousands of homeless dogs roam the streets in search of food, water and a home.
Meet Faustino – one of the many homeless dog who is nothing more than skin and bones, too weak to stand and discovered by a Good Samaritan on Friday lying on the side of the road very close to the curb just a few inches where the buses would stop and not even making an attempt to move.
When an animal advocate called The Voiceless Dogs of Nassau, his rescuer arrived and offered him food with her hand, Faustino opened his eyes, but was too weak to stand to even reach over for the treat.
“The look he gave me … a broken dog that was waiting to die. Some guys helped me carry the trap to my car … with a price, of course.”
And when Faustino and his rescuers arrived back at the refuge, the starving little pup smelling so badly from feces encrusted on his abdomen and tail, it was time for a bath. That night the dog rested and decompressed.
On Saturday morning, Faustino, who had nipped at his rescuer, the night before, turned into a very sweet dog.
“Under all that filth and infestation of fleas, I could see a tormented sould that had endured hell just for trying to exist.”
Off to the veterinary clinic Faustino went; sadly he is heavily heartworm positive, anemic and has an old fracture to his front leg. He is infested with parasites, but his most serious health issue is that he may be in end state kidney failure.
A complete blood workup has been ordered after Faustino’s body has a chance to be administered fluids and nourishment. He only weighs 15 pounds and should easily weigh twice that much. His prognosis is unknown at this time, but surely this boy deserved better than dying on the street after someone, somewhere and sometime just didn’t give a damn about their dog. At last, he has found comfort, food and love.
