A baby seal in Russia died after people flocked to take photos and pet her. As reported by MSN News, it is believed that the baby seal died from stress after crowds of curious people surrounded her for photo ops – even allowing their dogs to approach as the young pup cried for her mom.

Sadly, the pup’s mother was swimming nearby, but the mass of people kept her from approaching her baby. Animal rights activists eventually moved in to protect the seal pup from the curiosity seekers, but it was too late. Not only did the pup’s mother abandon her pup, but the stress of the unwanted attention had already taken a deadly toll.

The pup, dubbed Nelly, was taken to a rehabilitation center for care, but she died the next night. A representative from the rehabilitation center explained what happened:

Nelly died from the physiological effects of stress. The baby seals are very fearful. The hormones of stress, adrenaline and cortisol kill them’
