Authorities in Greene County are hoping to find the owners of a severely emaciated dog who was found abandoned on a road in Cairo, New York. The dog, dubbed Nathan, was found at a residence on Warren Stein Road last Sunday. The Columbia-Greene Humane Society/SPCA writes:
The Cairo Dog Control Officer was called late Sunday night by a homeowner who had found an undernourished Labrador/Staffordshire Terrier mix – now named Nathan – sleeping in their shed trying to keep warm.
The dog was transported to a veterinarian who determined that he is approximately one-to-two years of age, and 20-pounds underweight. The animal welfare agency stated:
Based on his condition, he had suffered from malnutrition and dehydration for many months. His examination placed him at a 2 on the Nestle Purina Body Condition System for canines, which is seriously emaciated.
Adding:
It appeared Nathan was abandoned on Warren Stein Road and was fortunate enough to be found before succumbing to starvation.
CGHS/SPCA President/CEO Ron Perez stated:
It’s heartbreaking to see a dog as sweet as Nathan plagued by malnutrition and being so neglected when our shelter provides free food to anyone that needs it, no questions asked. It’s my hope that the owner will be found and brought to justice.
The abandoned dog is now “doing great” and he is expected to make a full recovery.
