Another police K9 has been shot dead by a suspect who was on the run from the authorities. The most recent casualty is a Bakersfield, California, K9 named Jango, who suffered fatal injuries on Tuesday night and he and his handler approached a fleeing suspect.

On Wednesday morning, the tragic news was posted by the Bakersfield Police Department, which recounted the events leading up to Jango’s death:

At approximately 8:43 pm last night, Officers spotted a stolen vehicle traveling on Highway 58. Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, at which point the vehicle sped up and attempted to flee. The vehicle soon crashed, and the two occupants fled from the car. Air support quickly located one of the vehicle’s occupants hiding in a nearby resident’s backyard.

Both the suspect and Jango died after shots were fired – the authorities stated:

As a police K-9 Handler and his K-9 partner approached the suspect, the suspect opened fire, striking the K-9. Two officers returned fire, striking the suspect. Medical aid was provided to the suspect, despite this, the suspect was declared deceased at the scene. The K-9 was transported to an area emergency veterinarian hospital; however, the police K-9 succumbed to his injury and was declared deceased.

K9s of Valor commended the heroic dog, who lost his life while protecting his handler:

Jango died protecting his handler and fellow officers. Undoubtedly Jango saved the lives of fellow officers when he took the bullet/s intended for them. He died exactly how he lived, a hero.

K9s of Valor has provided more information about the dog who lost his life, writing:

Five year old K9 Jango was a dual purpose patrol and explosives detection dog from the Netherlands. He was partnered with Officer Mueller and joined the department in March of 2017. He loved to work. Most recently he took first place in bomb vehicle detection during the Murietta K-9 Trials. Jango also also loved to chase his tennis ball and beg for treats. He was a very special K9.

Rest in peace Jango.
