Almost four years have gone by since Ollie, an innocent pit bull was the victim of sadistic mutilation inflicted on him by Brendan Evans, a then thirty-one-year-old resident of Hollywood, Florida. Yet, the case is still making its way through the Broward County, Florida judicial system.

Since the beginning of the case, it has been passed down through three judges; the third and current judge being the Honorable John Murphy. There have also been three attorneys for Brendan Evans that have come and gone over the years.

It all started on October 10, 2017, when a couple passing by an alleyway in Hollywood, Florida saw a blue hardcover suitcase lying in the alley. Upon closer inspection they saw a paw sticking out and heard the heartbreaking cries of fright and pain coming from the suitcase. The couple immediately called the Hollywood, Florida Police .When the suitcase was opened, a dog was found inside, breathing but barely alive. His body was covered with over fifty stab wounds.

The dog, named Ollie was rushed to a local vet and survived for two days, but the injuries were too much for his poor little body to endure. He died two days later, on October 12, 2017. His death launched a manhunt for the person or persons responsible for such a horrific, sadistic act against a helpless dog.

The Hollywood Police Department, through their meticulous investigation of the suitcase were able to lift fingerprints and find DNA leading them to Brendan Evans. When Evans was arrested on November 22, 2017, the police found one of Ollie’s teeth in his wallet

Another gruesome scene greeted them when they searched Brendan’s apartment. There they found fur, blood, cat paws and remains of dead animals in the oven, refrigerator, and throughout his apartment. Many were proven to be cats Evans had gotten off Craigslist.

Brendan Evans was charged with 17 counts of aggravated animal cruelty – one charge for each deep stab wound that Ollie sustained and one charge for stuffing the defenseless dog in a suitcase and abandoning him in an alley. Each separate charge carries a 10-year sentence meaning Evans will spend the next 170 years in jail if found guilty.

The attorney for Brendan Evans stated in the defense that Brendan is suffering from mental illness and has sought treatment a dozen times in both Florida and Virginia. Investigations into Evans’s childhood discovered just the opposite. Brendan was described by those who knew him as a gifted student, athletic, raised by an affluent family and loving the family dog and cats.

Evan’s attorney also filed a motion to drop sixteen of the seventeen charges for aggravated animal cruelty. Judge Martin Fein denied this motion when he was on the case. The newest judge assigned to the case; Judge John Murphy also denied this motion.

A new hearing in the Ollie case is going to be held on August 23, 2021, at the Broward County Courthouse in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Brendan Evans was released from jail on probation but is back in the Broward County Jail for probation revocation for the crime of robbing a bank on a bicycle; not for the Ollie case. Brendan Evans needs to pay for his multiple acts of violence against animals. Time served is not an acceptable sentence for this extreme crime.

Judge Murphy needs to know that Ollie’s supporters are still standing strong and demanding a punishment that fits this horrific crime.

They will not stop until there is justice for the tortured, murdered dog.

Re: Brendan Evans case# 17013552CF10A

Brendan Evans should never be allowed to own another animal again and should be sentenced to the 170 years of incarceration per the charges.

This way he will never again see the light of day.  This is the only assurance that he will never again be able to inflict suffering on another animal or a human being.

It has been proven time and time again that those who torture, abuse, mutilate and kill animals will do the same to humans.

Society must be protected from  monsters like Brendan Evans who roam the streets in the guise of humans.

No animal deserves to suffer like Ollie did, and no person who inflicts such suffering on an animal should walk free.

When humans act with cruelty we characterize them as “animals”, yet the only animal that displays cruelty is humanity. – Anthony D. Williams
