Abandoned Chihuahua discovered in garbage bag sealed in storage bin for 17 hours

In Westchester County, a senior Chihuahua was discovered in a garbage bag sealed inside of a plastic storage bin on Wednesday.

According to the SPCA of Weschester’s Humane Law Enforcement Unit, investigators are seeking information on the person(s) responsible. On April 29, employees of a local animal rescue in Elmsford, New York noticed the blue plastic storage container at their front entrance. When they opened the container, they discovered a brown, female Chihuahua.

The dog has since been named Rue, and this feisty little pooch had scratched and chewed her way through the tied-up garbage bag – breaking some of her nails in the process, but avoiding suffocation.

Video surveillance captured a person leaving the container on April 28, with the dog trapped inside for nearly 17 hours before being discovered. Officers from the SPCA brought her back to the animal care campus where she is receiving care and is expected to be ready for adoption in the near future.

“It’s inconceivable that someone could do something so cruel to an innocent animal and we can’t imagine how frightened Rue must have been. We are so grateful that she was found before it was too late and that she is now getting the love and care she needs at the SPCA of Westchester” says Shannon Laukhuf, Executive Director. “We need to find the person(s) responsible for this intentional act of cruelty and are asking the public to please call our confidential hotline at (914) 941-7797 with any tips or leads.”
