Chinese social media users of Weebo slammed a zookeeper at an aquarium after the worker shared a video on social media of himself riding a beluga whale. Animal lovers called him a “show off” and claimed such treatment of the animal was nothing short of animal cruelty. Many have called for a boycott against this kind of animal performances.

“Whales and dolphins are supposed to live in the sea but are now confined in small prisons. They are forced to perform and work for aquariums every day. It’s all cruelty and torture!,” one Weebo user wrote.

The viral video showed the trainer climbing onto the back of the whale and ride it around the pool.

According to the Daily Mail, Luoyuanwan Sea World in Fuzhou, the 50-acre amusement park in southeastern China, is known for their performances using dolphins, beluga whales and sharks.

The zookeeper deleted the video after facing the severe controversy as well as other similar clips. Instead he posted other videos showing him training and feeding the whales.

A spokesperson for the park stated the interaction between animals and trainers is very important, claiming the performances are interactive.

Most people believe it is bad enough to capture these animals and force them to swim in small pools for entertainment, but to subject these wild animals to learn tricks and perform for audiences is reprehensible.
