The “world’s loneliest elephant” Kaavan, who has lived in captivity at the Islamabad’s Marghazar Zoo for the last 35 years shackled has been released. For the last eight years, Kaavan has lived alone since the death of his partner.
“Final preparations are underway and the crate has been moved into Kaavan’s enclosure. Keep your fingers crossed that everything will run smoothly. Soon he will be able to step foot into his new home in Cambodia. Unbelievable, right? Our hearts are pounding and the excitement level of the whole team is through the roof, but we could not be happier right now.”
“For the first time in 35 years, Kaavan’s enclosure in the Marghazar Zoo in Islamabad is finally empty. The elephant was moved safely into his transport crate after weeks of training. Right now, the giant and our team are on the way to the airport.

On Monday, Kaavan moved to the Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary in Siem Reap after a ten-hour plane ride with a military escort in coordination with the Pakistani authorities. Especially helpful getting the word out and helping were American businessman Eric S. Margolis and Cher’s foundation Free the Wild. Cher was on the ground in Cambodia when Kaavan arrived. Ironically, Kaavan seemed to enjoy the flight – eating, sleeping and relaxing.
According to Four Paws, the global animal welfare organization, it was dark when Kaavan stepped foot into the sanctuary in Cambodia. When he left his flight crate, Kaavan was treated to a fruitcake and banana tree leaves. And in the morning, for the first time in eight years, he became the “former loneliest elephant in the world” as he interacted with other elephants. Check out the photo – no words are needed here.
The remaining animals still living amid the decrepit conditions at the Marghazar Zoo are also scheduled to be moved to sanctuaries in the near future. Two retired dancing bears who are suffering from behavioral issues because of illness and lack of space are due to be transferred to Jordan in the next few months.
