Welcome Lenny to the world everyone. He is a newborn French bulldog who was an owner surrender from a breeder. This tiny puppy is only a few days old and was born with a significant cleft palate. In addition, his head is slightly swollen, and although it has not been confirmed, Lenny may have hydrocephalus.
ThisIsHouston has the adorable little guy in their care and are attending to his every need.
A cleft palate is an opening in the roof of the mouth making the puppy susceptible to anything that goes into his mouth winding up in his sinuses as well as his nasal passages, resulting in pneumonia. The initial sign of a cleft palate is watching the puppy try to nurse from his mother, and he is unable to latch-on and just mouths his mom’s nipple.
Many puppies are euthanized immediately after the cleft palate diagnosis, however that doesn’t necessarily have to be the end of a puppy’s life. Surgical correction may be advisable after four weeks of age. It is important to visit a veterinarian if a cleft palate is suspected.
“Just a little cleft PSA, if you ever find yourself or someone you know who has a cleft pup, please don’t bottle feed them. There is a high chance that bottle feeding will kill them. Cleft pups should be taken away from momma and put on a heat supply and tube fed every 2 hours. Thankfully, our team member Kourtney is experienced with cleft puppies and Lenny is in the best hands!,” the organization posted on their Facebook page along with Lenny’s photos.
Lenny will be having the best of care, and we will follow up on this little one’s progress. It is not known what Lenny’s future holds, but ThisIsHouston will do all that they can for him. One day at a time, Lenny!
