A Florida brewery’s innovative campaign to feature shelter dogs on beer cans has resulted in a reunion between a pet owner in Minnesota and a dog in Manatee County, Florida. As reported by Fox 13 News, Hazel was one of the featured pets on a can of Motorworks Brewing beer – and her image reached Monica Mathais, the woman who lost her three years ago.
When Hazel, aka Day Day, was taken in at the Manatee County Animal Services facility, shelter employees discovered a microchip, but the contact information was not up to date. Mathais, who used to live in Iowa, moved to Minnesota and lost the information she needed to update Hazel’s microchip with her current contact phone number.
Mathais discovered her missing dog while scrolling through Facebook; she tells the news agency of her stunned response:
“I was like, ‘Oh my gosh! That’s my dog!’”
She quickly contacted the shelter to let them know that their “Day Day” was her “Hazel.” Hans Wohlgefahrt, with Manatee County Animal Services, tells Fox how Mathais proved that the dog on the beer can was actually her long-lost pet:
We saw photos and vet records. This dog was such an important part of her family that she had everything to prove she was her owner,
Nobody knows how Hazel got from her original home to Florida, but now she is being reunited with her true owner with the help of the non-profit Friends of Manatee County Animal Services. Hazel’s story is an important reminder to keep your pet’s microchip up-to-date with current contact information.
