A woman in Wichita, Kansas, has been charged with animal cruelty after a malnourished dog, locked in a cage, was found in a dumpster outside of an apartment complex earlier this month. As reported by KAKE News, the cruelty suspect is identified as Raykesha Hardyway.
The dog found in the cage, dubbed Bowie, was so neglected that he weighed half of what a dog his breed and size should weigh. He has been steadily recovering from the neglect at the Wichita Animal Action League.
Hardyway was initially facing a felony animal cruelty charge, but it was reduced to a misdemeanor earlier this week. The animal shelter commented on the change, writing:

We became aware that the charges against Raykesha Hardyway have been dropped to a misdemeanor when the story broke.
It goes without saying, we are not happy and we are not satisfied.
We were not informed of this decision or allowed the opportunity to argue his case. We are reaching out to the appropriate channels to rectify this and hopefully, get proper justice for this sweet dog.
Hardyway is out of jail on bond.
