The Shasta County District Attorney Bureau of Investigations arrested Xaviero Kayli Ferguson on Thursday morning for her actions towards a puppy one week ago. According to the Shasta County District Attorney’s office, Ferguson has been charged with felony animal cruelty.
The DA filed a single count alleging a violation of Penal Code section 597(b).
“As a felony, the maximum available sentence for this crime is 3 years. After the passage of AB109, any sentence under this section is to be served in our county jail not state prison,” the DA posted on Facebook.
The disturbing incident occurred in Redding, California, after a woman had been caught on home surveillance video beating and biting a dog. As reported by KRCR News, the homeowner discovered the cruel incident after reviewing home surveillance footage from earlier in the week after Ferguson approached her residence and was told to leave.
The footage showed a woman walking with a large breed dog – the leashed dog, who appeared to be frightened of the woman, was thrown to the ground and bitten multiple times by the woman who appeared to be angry that the dog would not willingly walk with her. During the entire beating, the dog showed no aggression.
The case continues to be jointly investigated by Animal Regulations officers at Haven Humane Society and the District Attorney’s office. The friendly puppy will remain in the care of the Haven Humane Society.
