Wildlife officials in Colorado have come under harsh criticism after they seized a woman’s fox and euthanized him. As reported by CBS 4 News, Ashley Yeager, of Colorado Springs, rescued the fox in two years ago when he was a young kit. Since that time, Yeager raised the fox, dubbed Flash, as a pet and that is the reason that Colorado Wildlife Officials decided that he had to die.

According to the news agency, the fox was too tame to be set free, and wildlife officials worried that he could possibly contract rabies while living outside in a chain link enclosure that Yeager created for him. Because of the rabies risk, officials decided that Flash had to be put down.

Now the agency is being criticized for killing the tame fox. But officials have fired back with their own criticism stating:

“People cannot take care of wildlife better than their parents. It is selfish and irresponsible to take these animals from the wild,” said Frank McGee, CPW’s Area Wildlife Manager. “Wild animals belong in the wild. Period.”

While Yeager could have faced fines for raising Flash, wildlife officials felt that she had been punished enough by losing him, so they opted out of enforcing the fine rule.

  1. These POSs with badges killed this fox because they could…… why not send the fox to a nature education center where he could be cared for AND teach people about wildlife?

  2. Sounds like nothing but SPITE WORK at the hands of wildlife officials. I hope they feel pretty good about themselves now. This wasn’t about rabies because they had other options I’m sure !!!
