The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife has announced that the two remaining adult wolves with the Wedge wolf pack will be killed in order to protect cows living on forest land. According to the Wolf Conservation Center, Director Kelly Susewind has authorized the wolf killings because of wolf “depredations of cattle on grazing lands.”

Sophia Ressler, a Washington wildlife advocate and staff attorney at the Center, tells the Spokesman Review:

“The state’s constant killing of wolves shows that the current system’s completely broken. New rules would save wolves, prevent livestock losses and provide the accountability the people of Washington deserve in the management of our endangered wolves.”

In a release, the WDFW states:

WDFW discussed the impacts of removing one or two wolves from the Wedge pack territory and determined the current level of mortality should not negatively impact the ability to recover wolves in Washington. WDFW is providing one full business day (eight hours) advance public notice before initiating lethal removal activity.
