In West Babylon, New York, a woman has been charged with animal cruelty after neglecting her dog who became infected with maggots from its open wounds. Bunnie Smith was charged with animal cruelty in connection to her 9-year-old dog named Diamond.
According to the Suffolk County SPCA, Smith was arrested on May 8 after Roy Gross, Chief of the Suffolk County SPCA, stated she had brought Diamond to the NY Veterinary Specialty Center. At the veterinary hospital, doctors discovered maggots underneath the dog’s matted coat. Two old wounds were also infested with maggots; the dog smelled of urine and feces and was not able to walk.
Smith was issued a Field Appearance Ticket for Animal Cruelty (class A Misdemeanor) and will appear in First District Court, Central Islip to answer the charge on May 28, 2020.
