Wildlife officials in Washington state have killed the last two members of the Wedge pack in Stevens County. The wolves, a male and a female, were targeted because they are believed to be responsible for killing livestock.

According to a press release, the Washington’s Department of Fish and Wildlife has reported that the wolves were killed on August 13.  Sophia Ressler, Washington wildlife advocate at the Center for Biological Diversity, commented on the killings:

The nonstop killing of wolves in Washington has to end now. These wolves shouldn’t be gunned down just for trying to feed their families. It’s ludicrous that Washington officials aren’t implementing appropriate preventive measures and instead choose to slaughter a state endangered species.”

According to the release, the state has killed 34 wolves so far – the majority of the wolves have been killed because of “livestock conflicts.”

“There is no scientific support that killing wolves is an effective long-term solution for preventing conflict,” said Ressler. “Mandating effective range riding or other appropriate deterrence measures would help to deter conflict and, in turn, save both wolves and livestock.”

Other wolves in the state are currently at risk. According to the release, the state has an active “kill order” for wolves in the Leadpoint pack.
