The tiny owl rescued from the 75-foot Norway spruce cut down in upstate New York and shipped to the city to be the 2020 Rockefeller Center Christmas tree is soon to be freed.

“NOVEMBER 19, 2020by Ellen Kalish, Organizer
Little Rockefeller is doing well! His X rays came back without any fractures, and he has eaten 2 mice in the past 12 hours. He took a bath himself this morning. and we are getting ready to release him back into the wild this weekend,” stated Ellen Kalish on a fundraising page for the owl appropriately named Rockefeller.

According to the Ravensbeard Wildlife Center in Saugerties, New York, the saw-whet owl, the smallest owl in the northeast was discovered by the worker who helped to transport the tree on its 170 mile trip to the city. The man’s wife called the wildlife rehabilitation center.

Rockefeller is set to be released at dusk on Saturday.

Obviously, more needs to be done to protect wildlife before trees are cut down. Birds and other wildlife often hide in evergreen or other conifers during the winter because they provide a lot of warmth and protection.
