The man dubbed the “Dreadhead Cowboy,” who rode a horse for seven miles down the Dan Ryan Expressway in Chicago, was ordered to be held on $25,000 bond at a hearing on Wednesday. Cook County prosecutors say his horse may have to be euthanized.
Later in the day, Adam Hollingsworth walked out of jail; he faces felony aggravated animal cruelty and misdemeanor counts of trespassing and reckless conduct.
According to the Chicago Tribune, Adam Hollingsworth, 33, rode his brown and white horse south on the expressway on Monday, surrounded by several supporters on motorcycles in support of Kids’ Lives Matter. He videoed the event on Facebook Live.
The attorney for Hollingsworth stated her client would never do anything to harm his horse and riding the horse down the highway was part of a planned protest. His horse has always been well fed and up-to-date on all vaccinations. Judge David Nararro called the alleged treatment “terrible.”
Assistant State’s Attorney Kevin DeBoni, stated Hollingsworth had kicked and whipped the horse to continue galloping on the 7.5 mile down the expressway. The horse later collapsed and remains in critical condition.
After examining and treating the horse, veterinarians reported his heart rate had doubled, he had cuts on his front legs and his eyes were “dilated to the point where they looked like cartoon eyes.” Had the horse not received immediate veterinarian treatment at the time, he would have died from his injuries DeBoni stated.
The horse remains at an animal rescue shelter in critical condition at this time.
