At a shelter in Cleveland, Texas, a seven to 10-week-old Labrador retriever puppy had been on the list to be euthanized on Thursday when ThisIsHouston stepped forward to rescue him.
The puppy, since named Casper, was rushed to Vergi 24/7 for life saving treatment as he groaned in pain. His little belly was swollen from worms and his gums very pale as he fought through a severe case of mange and infection. Casper has received multiple blood transfusions; his red blood cells continue to be monitored. Unfortunately he is still not interested in eating.
On Saturday morning, Casper’s update includes he is being treated for demodex, sarcoptic mange and hookworms which can be fatal if not treated. It is sad indeed that this young puppy has likely only known pain and suffering since birth.
“But he can be helped,” ThisIsHouston reported on their social media page. “He isn’t to far gone. He can recover. He’s staying another night, and the ER staff will be giving him an appetite stimulant. If that doesn’t work, they will consider tube feeding him…”
Casper’s latest update:
” Casper is still not doing great. His heart rate dropped overnight, but he did just start eating this morning. He will likely stay at VERGI another night…”
