Someone abandoned an unwanted litter of puppies outside of an animal shelter in Monroe County, Alabama. On Monday afternoon, the Monroe County Animal Shelter recounted the sad situation to Facebook followers, writing:
Today, a crew member was up at the shelter cleaning, and saw a vehicle pull up to our gate. Something large was removed from the vehicle and left outside the gate. She walked down to the gate and what she found was a large cooler full of puppies. Five 8-10 week olds to be exact.
The crew member was able to get help and the puppies were warmed up and vaccinated. The shelter explained how the puppies could have suffered if they had not been found in time:
These puppies were left in a COOLER, with a hole cut in the top, and a heavy cinder block laid on top of the hole. It has been pouring rain here in Monroeville for most of the day, and the temperature outside is steadily dropping. We are expecting temperatures in the 40s tonight, and only in the low 50s by daylight. Puppies, young dogs, and kittens are especially vulnerable to the wet and cold. By morning when the next shift arrived, we could have had a cooler full of puppies that had frozen to death, or drowned.
There is no excuse
This should not have happened – the shelter explains why:
There are multiple numbers listed on a sign on our gate. The shelter number, and personal cellphone numbers of our crew. Anyone can call or text, and someone will meet you at the shelter if they are able. Do not leave animals tied to the gates, left in coolers, boxes, etc. Do not just throw them out beside the gate, because Highway 47 is a very busy road, and the animal is likely to be ran over. The numbers are posted for a reason. Use them. Call us. Leave a message if you need to. Just don’t toss out defenseless creatures.
According to the shelter, the puppies will not be available for adoption because they are being taken in by a rescue partner.
