An unusually friendly, rare black coyote, has been captured after she befriended a Georgia woman’s dog. The coyote, dubbed Carmine, had been on the radar of the Atlanta Coyote Project for months because of her strange, outgoing personality.

Yellow River Wildlife Sanctuary explains:

After months of causing fear on the streets of Symrna and Cobb Carmine has moved in. Not sure why Carmine is so comfortable with people- maybe she was raised as a pet and dumped. But whatever the reason after going in dog doors and playing with dog’s while on leashes (with humans holding those leashes) there was no way this coyote could stay in the wild.

Carmine had taken a fancy for Vanessa Prior’s Great Pyrenees, Ruth Bader. Prior tells CNN:

She came every day to play. They would chase each other, play on the pool cover, gently wrestling or nap side by side.”

Explaining how the rare friendship ultimately led to Carmine’s capture:

Because of their friendship and because she kept on coming back to play, they were able to catch her,” she said. “They put some traps in the back of my yard and one night she finally got into it.”

Carmine will live out her life at the sanctuary, which stated:

She is doing quite well! We hope once quarantine is done she will move in with Wilee (our other coyote who was raised as a pet and loves people and dogs).

  1. Absolutely fantastic outcome for this lovely furbaby. Others would have euthanized her for being “habituated to humans/dogs”. It’s wonderful that she will be living with another friendly coyote!!! I wish them many years of friendship and happiness???
