Train strikes and kills female Grizzly bear in Canada

On Thursday night, a female Grizzly bear was struck and killed by a train in Banff National Park. As reported by the Rocky Mountain Outlook, the bear, known as 143 to wildlife officials, was hit by a Canadian Pacific train near Lake Louise and Castle Junction.

Bear 143 was observed with two bear cubs in the spring. According to a Canada Parks release,

Her home range spanned Banff, Yoho and Kootenay national parks. No grain spills or carcasses were observed by responding officers. Parks Canada and CP Rail are both investigating this mortality.”

There is no information at this time about the bear’s cubs.
