In Highlands Ranch, Colorado, a family is heartbroken after their seven-year-old English bulldog died after falling through the ice while walking on a pond Friday.

According to the South Metro Fire Rescue, rescuers responded to a 911 call after receiving a report a dog had fallen through the ice at Cheese Ranch Park. Firefighters from Station 17 responded and arrived, however the dog was already underwater. A firefighter, wearing a drysuit, was not able to find the dog, and additional personnel including divers arrived and opened up a larger section of the ice in order to perform an underwater search.

The dog was found, and medics administered oxygen and attempted CPR, however were not able to resuscitate the dog.

“If you see a person or pet fall through the ice, never attempt to rescue them on your own. Call 911 immediately and remain on shore. Rescuers often rely on details from witnesses to establish “last seen points,” information critical for locating victims. Thank you to Douglas County Sheriff’s Office for assisting.”

Please keep your pets on leashes and don’t assume the ice on any lake or pond is safe.
