Three tourists at the Outer Banks beaches were seen trying to capture a month-old wild foal in order to take selfies reported the National Park Service.
The situation occurred on Friday at Shackleford Banks, which is a part of Cape Lookout National Seashore; the disturbing actions were caught on video.
“During their chase – and trying to catch the foal so they could take a ‘selfie’ – they managed to scare the foal enough that became separated from its mother,” the Cape Lookout National Seashore posted on their Facebook page.
“We can only hope that mom found her baby again after these three stopped chasing them. The foal is under one month old and still nursing, it definitely needs mom for protection.”
The organization reminded tourists that social distancing with the wild horses is set at 50 feet. Photos should be taken with a telephoto/zoom setting or lens. There are about 100 wild horses in the park.

“SUNDAY MORNING UPDATE Mare and foal involved have been located together. Grateful for the determined Park volunteer who found them together finally early this morning! Two days of work, worry, and wasted resources created by the irresponsibility of a few.
A witness intervened and warned the visitors to leave the horses alone. The National Park Service is looking for the three people involved and want to question them.
If you see an incident of harassment of wild horses, call the Park immediately at 252-728-2250. Leave a message, describing what’s happening and where you are. Or if you believe it’s an emergency, call 911. Take pictures. Get identifying information like boat registration numbers.
