At the busy Toronto Pearson Airport in Canada, one runway had to be closed for a brief time on Tuesday morning after a dog escaped from his crate the evening before on an arriving flight on British Airways.
According to the CBCNews, the dog named Crystal, a Spanish podenco, arrived with three other dogs and were due to be greeted by a Nova Scotia based animal rescue group that helps the breed coming from Spain. As the door of the plane was opened, Crystal had been out of her cage and ran out across the airfield.
Podencos are dogs known for their speed, endurance and agility, and it took nearly 13 hours to capture the pooch. Rescue person, Rhonda Martins stated it had been raining, and she hoped the dog would have stopped to find cover from the weather, but she just continued to run.
Fortunately, the dog was located using security and thermal cameras which are part of the airport’s wildlife control team that use birds of prey to scare off other birds from the runway. When Crystal was spotted getting close to an aircraft landing, air traffic controllers shut the runway down. And when Crystal finally tuckered herself out from running in circles and scaring her rescuers, she crawled underneath one of the wildlife trucks and rested.
Dog treats then did their job, and Crystal has arrived at her new home in New Brunswick. Many thanks to everyone involved in the dog’s rescue – sometimes it does take a village, and in this case – a busy airport.
