A witness observed a heartless act of cruelty at a Hinckley, Ohio, cemetery two days before Christmas. As reported by WGNTV News, the witness saw a car driving away from the Hope Memorial Gardens cemetery with a toddler and dog chasing after it.

The witness called the authorities, and stayed with the three-year-old boy, who identified himself as Tony. The Hinkley Police worked with local media agencies to get the boy’s photo out to the public,  and a relative who recognized the toddler reached out to Tony’s father, who contacted the authorities to let them know that the little boy had been in his mother’s care at the time of the abandonment.

The police department commented on the help received from the public:

We have identified the parents and are working this evening with Medina County Children Services on the investigation. I hope to provide further information later this evening. Thank you to our local news media for their help in finding the parents. Also all of the calls and messages to help Tony are greatly appreciated. All of you have renewed my faith and appreciation for the wonderful community we live in and that surrounds us. All of you are truly the best! God Bless all of you…..Chief Centner

Tony’s story resonated with Jeremy Lowe, who was in foster care himself as a child. Lowe utilized social media to get donations of toys and gifts for the abandoned child. He told the news agency:

A little boy and his dog, Christmas time. You know, as heartless as it gets, really. So that was the whole thought, you know, just take his mind off of the previous bad experience from a day or two before.

The community responded, filling the Hinkley Police Department lobby with gifts for little Tony. Lowe is hopeful that the outpouring of love will help wipe away Tony’s sad memories of being left in the cemetery with his dog.

Tony has been turned over to an aunt and uncle for care and with the police and his father’s help, his dog was found in the cemetery. So far, there are no charges in the case.
