In the City of Brookshire, Texas, a 21-year-old man is alleged to have stolen a child’s pet horse on Monday before riding it to death and beating it because it was exhausted and would no longer walk. Traveon Marques Hillsman was arrested on Tuesday and charged with animal cruelty.

According to the Brookshire police description of the incident on the organization’s Facebook page, Hillman allegedly rode the horse from Brookshire to Fulshear in a round trip of 15 miles. Witnesses stated he had ridden the horse without stopping for hours, and when the horse was so exhausted, he could no longer move, Hillman beat the horse on the face and the mouth while yelling obscenities.

“Officers observed the missing horse to be extremely exhausted, dripping in sweat and shaking uncontrollably. The horse then fell shortly after and stopped breathing,”Chief of Police Brandal Jackson stated when officers arrived at the scene.

The horse had been stolen from a local stable and died outside H&E Equipment Services as employees there tried to help, but to no avail.

The horse had been a Christmas present for a 10-year-old child. The child’s grandfather, who purchased the horse for the little girl was devastated.

Hillsman faces four charges – felony cruelty to livestock, theft of livestock, burglary of a building and evading arrest.

Rest in peace little horse.

  1. My family is devistated….My daughter is not sure entirely what has happened. She might still be to young to process the whole thing. She knows her horse was stolen and abused and is not with us anymore. Why are people so evil???

    • I am so sorry Valerie. Having my own horses, I had tears in my eyes while writing this. My sincere condolences to your daughter and to all of your family. I hope the suspect, if found guilty, is punished to the fullest extent of the law.
