A Texas police officer from the Amarillo Police Department was caught on video kicking his own police dog this week after an arrest.
According to the news release from the department, the incident occurred on December 30, 2019 as an Amarillo Police K9 officer had dispatched his K9 to assist officers in apprehending a suspect who had stolen a vehicle. As other officers had been handcuffing the suspect, the K9 officer kicked the K9 on time as he was returning the dog to the police vehicle.
“The Amarillo Police Department is investigating the incident on two fronts. There is an Internal Affairs investigation to determine if the officer violated any department policies or procedures. The officer’s chain of command will determine disciplinary actions if there are sustained allegations of policy violations. Under Texas Penal Code Section 38.151, a person commits an offense if the person recklessly, taunts, torments or strikes a police service animal…
Amarillo Police Department K9s live with their handlers and their families. This K9 has since been removed and is being cared for by the K9 Unit supervisor. The dog does not appear to have sustained any injuries, but has been scheduled to undergo a physical examination by a veterinarian.
The officer is currently on the job although he is performing his duties without his K9.
